Dr. Heather Uphold
Assistant Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Dr. Heather Uphold completed her Bachelors degree in Psychology and her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She recently defended her dissertation entitled Adventure-Based Counseling with Combat Veterans: Experiences, Perceptions and its Impact on Mental Health Symptomology earning her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision in August 2022. She has taught in both the Counseling Psychology Masters program at Robert Morris University and the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Masters program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Uphold has worked in the human services and mental health profession since 2001. Her counseling experience includes work with homeless, dual-diagnosed veterans, intellectual disabilities, drug and alcohol, and trauma. She is active in several professional organizations, including the American Counseling Association, Association of Counselor Education and Supervision, Association for Specialists in Group Work, and co-founder and member of the Pennsylvania Division of the Military and Government Counseling Association and several regional, state, and local affiliates. She currently serves as the Vice President for a local non-profit, Canyon Heroes, which provides adventure therapy experiences– to help heal the psychological wounds of war for combat veterans.
