Reciprocal Teaching

Students have the opportunity to engage in dialogue with the teacher and/or peers in reciprocal teaching. Students are involved in designing questions, summarizing, clarifying, and predicting.

Learning Tasks:

  • View video and read the checklist of how to use the strategy.
  • Did you learn the four steps integral to this teaching method?
  • Learn how to make the strategy “creative” (e.g., reading buddies, small group, presentations, or one-on-one discussions).

Discussion Questions:

  • What is meant by being an “active participant” in this activity?
  • This strategy involves critical thinking on the part of the students. Describe how the four steps inherent in this activity will challenge your students in building their critical thinking skills.
  • Consider how students could “present” and be creative using this particular method. Describe in three or four sentences why this strategy could be a useful teaching strategy.
